Understanding Your Role as a Personal Representative
Hi, I’m Oklahoma attorney Meg Prestidge, and today I want to talk to you about what happens after you’re appointed the personal representative and what are the first things you need to do. The very first thing I would suggest that you do is to go to irs.gov so that you may apply for an employer identification number online. When you get to their website, the very first thing you will see are options. Select the application for EIN or employee identification number online.
It’ll take you to the next page, which has three steps. Under step three, you’ll see a button that says apply online. You’ll select that button. Then you’ll be taken to another page, and that page gives you EIN assistance. In other words, it gives you options under what kind of circumstance or scenario you’re applying for your EIN.
Acquiring Your Employer Identification Number (EIN)
Of course, you want to choose the one that says estate. It’s important not to do this before you’re appointed the personal representative. Things could happen where you do not get appointed personal representative. Just various things could happen before you need to get that tax ID number.
You will be required to have a tax ID number for depositing any monies that you gather from the assets of the decedent. For more information and to learn about other topics in my attorney blog, you may contact me at oklahomawillandtrust.com.
